** Gerry Wright joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as a 16 year old Seaman Boy, second class, in 1955.
He was Later promoted through the Upper Yardman scheme to officer rankand retired in 1981 when told he was too old to go to sea.
During his career he took part in the British nuclear weapons tests off Christmas Island, commanded three naval ships and was a trained Helicopter controller and Principal warfare officer.
